💔 How does hypertension affect my heart?

💡 High blood pressure is considered values higher than 130/80 mmHg according to American guidelines and higher than 140/90 according to European and more classical recommendations. However, both agree that the ideal pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. Beyond these cutoff values, sustained high blood pressure causes vascular damage, accelerating the process of atherosclerosis and arterial obstruction. 🤔 What are the main changes that hypertension produces in the heart?
⚠️ Left ventricular hypertrophy. Increased heart thickness can lead to myocardial ischemia and infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, or even sudden death.
⚠️ Enlargement of the left atrium. It causes arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation, which is a rhythm disorder that produces strong tachycardia (increased heart rate) and can produce clots in the heart that have the potential to embolize/reach the brain 🧠.
⚠️ Left ventricular dilation (the main responsible for pumping blood to the body). This is a late and very serious stage, heart dilation and loss of strength lead to heart failure.
⚠️ Pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure. In even later stages and as a consequence of left ventricular failure, pulmonary pressure may increase and right ventricular failure may occur.
