Anxiety has multiple faces or forms of manifestation. One of them, and perhaps the most extreme, is a panic attack which can be accompanied by symptoms that mimic a heart attack. As seen in the movie Inside Out 2, this emotion takes absolute control of the body.
A panic attack is a sudden and intense experience of fear or extreme discomfort that can occur without warning. These attacks can be terrifying and can create a sense of loss of control or impending doom. Although panic attacks can be frightening, they usually last no more than 30 minutes and are not physically dangerous.
Panic attacks are relatively common and can affect people of all ages. Epidemiological studies estimate that around 2 to 3% of the world's population experiences panic attacks at some point in their lives. Anyone can experience a panic attack, but the risk is higher for teenagers and people in their 20s, and women are more than twice as likely as men.
What are the symptoms of a panic attack? Why can it simulate a heart attack?
The symptoms of a panic attack can vary from person to person. Most people who regularly experience panic attacks do not experience all of these symptoms, but they may have many of them:
- Feeling of shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Palpitations or rapid heartbeats.
- Excessive sweating.
- Trembling or shaking.
- Feeling dizzy or faint.
- Fear of losing control or going crazy.
- Fear of dying.
- Feeling of tightness in the chest or discomfort.
Chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, and high blood pressure are symptoms and signs that a patient may experience during a heart attack. Hence, panic attacks are the great simulator and a common reason for consultation.
Specialized cardiological consultation allows for differentiation between one situation and the other and proper treatment of the patient.
In summary, panic attacks are the great mimicker of a heart attack. They are intense experiences of fear or discomfort that can be mistaken for cardiac symptoms. It is important to seek medical help for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. With proper treatment, it is possible to control panic attacks and improve quality of life.
