Dizziness and hypertension: Can they be associated?

What is dizziness? It's a sensation of lightheadedness or spinning movement that can be caused by various factors. Some of the most common causes include issues in the inner ear, such as Meniere's disease or loose crystals in the ear, as well as neurological disorders like vestibular migraine.

So, if it's an ear or neurological problem, what's its relationship with hypertension?

鈻笍 The first relationship is that dizziness can be very distressing, as it abruptly affects balance and generates great fear. This stressful situation leads to hypertension, like any other stressful situation. It's very common to check blood pressure, seeking the problem there, and finding it elevated, assuming it's the simple but incorrect cause of what's happening. Of course, the blood pressure will be elevated, but it simply isn't the cause of dizziness. That's why we tirelessly repeat in this space and in consultations how blood pressure should be properly taken and under what conditions.

鈻笍 The second relationship is discovering a case of chronic hypertension by starting to monitor blood pressure after a bout of dizziness.

In conclusion, hypertension doesn't cause dizziness. Eventually, the stress/fear of a dizzy spell can lead to reactive hypertension. What needs to be treated is the cause, usually located in the ear, that's causing the dizziness, not the blood pressure, which only responds to the stress of the moment.
