What is angioplasty? It's an invasive procedure where coronary arteries are studied using a catheter, and if necessary👉, one or more arteries are opened up by inserting one or more stents (see image).

What is a stent? It's a metal mesh that allows for the repermeabilization (opening up) of an obstructed artery.

Should every coronary obstruction be treated? No, it all depends on the clinical presentation🩺. Especially in stable chronic cases, not all lesions need to be treated. Most commonly, an indication for treatment arises from some form of stress test (exercise electrocardiogram, stress echocardiogram, or cardiac SPECT), but this isn't always accurate or in line with the most current evidence.

🔸Here are the most relevant appropriate criteria for angioplasty in stable coronary patients:
- Only lesions causing significant symptoms despite optimal drug therapy.
- Obstructions in high-risk areas for the entire heart.
- Lesions with characteristics indicating a high risk of progressing to a heart attack.
- A positive stress test alone is not sufficient criteria for angioplasty.
