🐟 Fish oil derivatives, when used in a proper medical context and with precise indication, have shown benefits. So, should everyone take fish oil to improve cardiovascular health? Does it prevent heart attacks or strokes? The answer is no. There's a lot of confusion around this topic because fish oil supplements are "advertised" with unproven benefits and are often equated with pharmaceutical products (which they are not). This can lead to the misconception that any omega-3 is good for cardiovascular health, which is not the case.

⛔ What do we NOT recommend in Cardiology? International guidelines do not recommend the use of fish oil supplements. It's important to read the label; they always clarify that they are only "dietary supplements" and not medications.

✅ What do we recommend in Cardiology? When? In patients who have had a cardiovascular event (such as a heart attack💔), and have elevated triglycerides despite adequate treatment with statins plus ezetimibe, incorporating ethyl eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the form of icosapent ethyl🐠 (a stable ethyl ester of the omega-3 fatty acid called eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA) in doses of 2 grams every 12 hours is recommended. This is only achieved with pharmaceutical products like Vascepa (see image). Therefore, it's very important to visit your cardiologist to receive the appropriate medication and invest properly in your health.
