💔 Emotions and the heart

Anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia can affect your heart.

💔 Emotions have a direct impact on cardiovascular health. The heart is heavily stimulated by the nervous system, and therefore its response is directly related to what happens to us, both from a physical and emotional standpoint. Hence, we can notice that when we are happy or excited, the heart beats faster, and when we are calm, the heart rate slows down. All of these are manifestations indicating that the heart is not a machine that works independently of what happens to us. Quite the opposite.

Positive emotions affect us favorably in many ways and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, on the other hand, negative psychosocial factors are recognized risk factors and increase the likelihood of cardiovascular events. Among them, we can highlight anxiety, stress, depression, and insomnia. So much so, that strong negative emotions can trigger a heart attack or cardiac arrhythmias. This is recognized, for example, in earthquakes or sports events where fans intensely suffer with their teams. Takotsubo syndrome 🦑, also known as "broken heart syndrome," is a clear example of this; the heart muscle undergoes a particular type of infarction characterized by a transient alteration of its function triggered, generally, by intense negative emotion 😖.

💡 It's important to consult your cardiologist for a detailed clinical evaluation🩺 and to identify what is happening and work together with the mental health specialist.
